Attending TEDx MVSR this Saturday.

I'm especially looking forward to the talk by Siddartha Malempati about reclaiming the digital infrastructure for the commons, internet monopolies, community Wi-Fi networks and FreedomBox
(forgot the exact title, sorry!)

It will be an 18-minute talk covering various issues around the topic of digital infrastructure.

Freedom in a Box

My talk about privacy, decentralization, self-hosting, freedom of speech and FreedomBox.

It's a non-technical talk meant to spread awareness about the dangers of mass surveillance and the alternatives that exist to centralized systems.

Delivered at ThoughtWorks Hyderabad for the 46th edition of GeekNight on 2nd Jan, 2019.

We mentioned that Community Wi-Fi deployments are going on in 12 villages in the presentation.

I just got news that 7 of them have been completed.

The main blocker at this point seems to be obtaining donated laptops/desktops to deploy the software on.

Digital Empowerment in Rural India - powered by FreedomBox.

Sudhamsh Kandukuri and I presented yesterday at XConf India 2018.

An inspiring story of a grassroots movement where people rejected Facebook's Free Basics and installed low-cost community Wi-Fi networks instead.
A FreedomBox on the network provides most of the essential digital services required, offline.

Video recording: coming soon!

6-year-old article about FreedomBox from Wired. They were so wrong.

Free software projects might move slowly at times but they don't die so easily like tech startups, precisely because of the software freedoms granted to people.

Migration from to is complete. I am using for synchronization of notes across devices with my serving as an always-on synchronization point.

It's a good enough replacement for . The Android app needs to improve its text editor.
It also has a Web Clipper but I don't know what to use it for since I already use .

Every user on a FreedomBox gets the option to host a website by default.

Steps:
1. SSH into your FreedomBox
2. Create a directory called ~/public_html
3. Place the files of your website in the above directory

Your website will be available on the path ~username on your FreedomBox, e.g. familyname.host/~username

This is possible through an Apache module called userdir which comes enabled by default on FreedomBox.

Just rewatched Eben Moglen's talk called "Freedom in the Cloud".

It's just as relevant today as it was in 2010. We now have an even greater data misuse with the growth of Machine Learning algorithms.

I wish someone made an animated explainer video of the same content for people who are neither programmers nor lawyers, like one of those animated science videos on YouTube. Viral videos can be used for good too! 😉

Migrating my website and blog to a new instance. Expected downtime is 1 day. 🤐

Trying to add Turbolinks to the FreedomBox web interface.
Page loads seem so much faster with it! :blobaww:

Fediverse, let's welcome @harry7 the newest member on this instance and to the project.

Inspired by @bob I created a DAT replica of freedombox.org on the Beaker Browser.

Also seeded it on hashbase.io for availability. It's 18.07 MB in size, if you want to seed it.

Excited to learn that the web interface is being translated into . :blobcheer:

Glad that the project moved away from well before Microsoft had thoughts of acquiring it. 😌
