There are organizations like NYC Mesh and GuifiNet building community mesh networks in the west.
Meanwhile in India, we have this surveillance-powered, Google-partnered and VC-funded crap called Wi-Fi Dabba 🤦♂️
Is this surveillance realism in action? Has surveillance capitalism been normalized so much already? This kind of capitalism isn't even 20 years old yet!
Mesh networks might be the future of networking, but not like this!
My talk about Linux on Mobile on #fosdem2020 with Merlijn Wajer from Maemo Leste is now online!
I have never used a cross-poster since I don't have a birdsite account, but its quite annoying to find toots with an RT and a bunch of @twitter.com links on the Fediverse.
Can people who write cross-posting apps please just remove that irrelevant junk before forwarding the content to the Fediverse?
Being white, cis and male I have many privileges many other people do not have. There are people who need the protection of anonymity, or who look for help on the internet. There are people who are threatened by racists, homophobes or sexists, who reinvent their identity or who struggle with psychological problems. If you force people to express themselves only under their real name, it excludes their perspective. Forcing people to use their real names is nonsense.

In the digital network age, the difference between fascism and freedom will be decided by who owns and controls the means of communication. Is it to be corporations (and by extension, governments) or is it to be us: individuals?
If we lose this one, the 2030s and 2040s won’t be like the 1930s and 1940s; they’ll be like the 1930s and 1940s amplified by the full destructive power of a hundred years of exponential increase in technological capability.
"We’ve already laid the infrastructure of techno-fascism. We’ve already created (and are creating) the panopticons. All the fascists need to do is move in and take the controls. And they will do so democratically, before destroying democracy, just as Hitler did."

I don't want to be informed when my face are being scanned, in the same way that I don't want to be informed when a website is about to sell my data. What I want is for the law not to allow such things.

TLDR: Running a personal server should be just as simple as using a smartphone.
In light of the #XMPP Summit and #FOSDEM. IMO the biggest thing XMPP is missing is a name. "Normies" won't use an acronym as complicated as XMPP. And they need a way to ask "if others are *on it*". Without a name, it can never catch on.
So either we re-adopt #Jabber in full (fuck Cisco) or we need a new name for "IM over XMPP".
