YouTube-dl tip, music, CLI

Want to listen to a song from YouTube without actually opening the browser and wasting data on video?

Try this on the command line.

mpv `youtube-dl --get-url "ytsearch:the song name" --extract-audio`

(vlc can also be used instead of mpv)

ytsearch only picks up the top search result, so make your query as specific as possible.

"More bad news: most synthetic nitrogen applied on farm fields in the United States is not going into crops. Recent studies put nitrogen uptake by crops at about 30 percent. This means that 70 percent of what is applied either goes into the atmospher or into water. Hence, 'two-thirds of the US drinking supply is contaminated or high levels with carciongenic nitrates or nitrites, almost all excessive use synthetic nitrogen #fertilizers."

description of suicide trends

"In India, the overproduction of farm commodities, overwhelming debt, and pressure to conform to chemical companies' use of expensive pesticides have driven many farmers to commit suicide. Since th early 2000s (when GMOs were first introduced in India), suicide has taken the lives of over 100,000 farmers in India. In a cruel twist... one of the most common forms of self-immolation is by drinking pesticide."

This book is fantastic. I know the barest outlines of U.S. agricultural history, and "Kiss the Ground" tells it with humor, drama, and loads and loads of concrete facts. I'm really getting a lot out of it, and it's not a slog to get through.

This is cool:

"For a modern smartphone to be sustainable, at the very minimum it has to get security updates and it needs to be possible to change the inevitably failing battery. This site is designed to help with finding those phones: Phones that are supported by an alternative Android distribution are listed together with guides for changing the battery."

I like when I talk to people writing code and that it's not their job but they do something entirely not related to IT.

Programming is a way to express oneself, it shouldn't be a walled garden restricted for the "real developers".

Today in digital archaeology: I wanted a PDF calendar generator and found one from 2009 that seemed nice, but the website had long ago disappeared. Luckily the internet archive had crawled it, and since the code was GPL'ed, I was able to update it to build on a modern system and produce page-a-day agendas for my e-ink tablet.

Joke's on #Microsoft - if all their code was open there would be nothing for the #SolarWinds hackers to steal.

Hmm, now I wonder if there's a platform that could help them host it.

Looks like php-mcrypt is missing in Bullseye, and that takes out a swathe of apps, such as privatebin, dokuwiki, Lychee, Friendica and Zap. #Freedombone

@aral Yeah! Shortly (2-3 days) after you said that,… was merged, representing the last remaining two boxes on the checklist!

Sounds like migration should happen any day and will become the upstream for #gitea development. It's there as a placeholder repo, and you can already file issues.

Other gitea org projects like the CLI tea and the git library for go are already hosted there.

A fascinating idea. Viewing your browser tabs as part of the filesystem, allowing you to use standard Unix filesystem tools to view and manipulate the tab contents. The Unix "everything is a file" concept is still a powerful one.

Libraries will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no libraries. - Anne Herbert

Yesterday, NimCoon helped with a New Year's Party. 🥳

A group of high school girls managed to get a speaker system but couldn't hook up a phone to it. Two of them came to me. Well, they came for someone else who wasn't available. They had a YouTube playlist and a USB thumb drive.

It was an easy job for NimCoon to download the music from YouTube as mp3 files. They were weird remixes of some songs, most of which I haven't seen before.

Me? I slept through the night. 🤷‍♂️

For all their problems, I'd like to thank computers for giving us a glimpse of a better world.

A bright and colorful world of overwhelming abundance. A world in which we all have superpowers.

A world in which we are free to be ourselves. A world in which we can find others we want to be with, and keep others who are toxic to us away.

The dopamine we get from interacting with this better world is not fake. A better world can be addiction-forming of course, like food. Who wouldn't want more?

Let us all join hands and make 2021 a wholesome and fruitful year.

Be nice to each other. Stay safe for each other. Spend more time with each other.

Switch to FOSS. Switch to small tech. Move away from surveillance capitalism.

"Join hands", well, you know what I mean.

I love you all. Happy New Year.
