I also tried a couple of dat sites from hashbase.io, but they are taking forever to load.

I used Beaker Browser back when hypercore was still called dat.

Since the renaming, I've been trying to open every hyper:// url I came across with Beaker Browser and was consistently greeted with a "Site Not Found". It doesn't seem to be able to open dat:// urls either.

Does anybody have a working hyper:// url I can test with?

I am using Beaker Browser 1.1

US has 3X the vaccine needed for its people, and denies India raw vaccine materials as cases spike to 300k / day.
Meanwhile, China getting vaccines to poorer Global South countries as US and UK continue vaccine hoarding and inequity.

And it's done! A 💯% legitimate implementation of Google's FLoC standard for Firefox in an extension:

Finally we can have this awesome private ad company gift in a browser that is not chromium based!

And of course it's a completely serious and not at all satirical/sarcastic implementation. I swear!

Try opening a Microsoft e-book. It breaks because they closed the DRM servers.

The books stopped working.

PS3? Wii? Same story.

The only way to get the same freedom and privacy with digital media we had with physical media, is piracy.

We got scammed.

No one should ever make the mistake of thinking that a corporation is "good" - even the corporation that does consistent good today is liable to changes in ownership and management in the future that can drastically alter its conduct.

By all means, cheer the things that companies do, when they benefit the public - and condemn the things that do harm.

Always fight for the user, never for the system.

The digital rights activists who talk about "competition" aren't interested in competition for its own sake - rather, we're concerned with competition only to the extent that it gives technology users more control over their lives, more technological self-determination.

We don't want competition to see which company can trick or coerce you into surrendering your fundamental human rights, in the most grotesque and humiliating ways at the least benefit to you.

Tibor Kaputa's Simple apps series is quite good as a replacement for most of the stock Android apps.

Maybe stock apps directly from the AOSP project would've been better (for native look and feel). The Clock app I installed is a fork of an AOSP app.

Installed Element, NewPipe and a Keyboard additionally. Will install Blokada later.

Maybe I won't be satisfied till I build a LineageOS image for this phone and flash it. 🤷‍♂️

A family member bought a new 10 phone today. Their needs were quite basic.

It was polluted with Google spyware as expected. So, I spent some time uninstalling/disabling all the apps with trackers. It even had Facebook app installed by default!

I had to replace every stock app (even calculator, clock and dialer) with alternatives from F-Droid.

Google replacement of AOSP's essential apps with its own spyware seems almost complete (only Camera and FM Radio seemed unchanged).

@JordiGH I give a talk two or three times a year on ethics and values in open source, and one of the points I try to emphasize is that you really, really need to understand what your own values and principles are, because these questions will never land in your lap with a hazmat label on them saying "ethical quandary here". They'll just be listed as issue number 4 of this quarter's deliverables.

I used to laugh when I would open any given business textbook and inevitably see the faux-chart promising growth, as pictured here.

But now I find the image depressing because it is the fundamental hallucination of a species that is destroying itself.

#ForestFacts fact #3
The #WoodWideWeb is a communication network between #trees, #fungi and #MicroOrganisms.

In a #forest's #soil there is a symbiotic network between fungi, #tree #roots and microorganisms. Trees can use this network to communicate and help each other.

* #Saplings, young trees, receive carbon compounds from older trees.
* Trees warn each other e.g. about vermin and poisonous plants.
* Sick trees get enzymes from healthy trees
* If a tree dies lots of its nutrients of the tree go into the network

"before humans there were #forests, after them only #desert"

I just watched the DVD and I loved it. It basically has 3 major topics:
🌳 The great green wall and how it impacts the region
🌍 African lives and how they are affected by the #ClimateCrisis (#drought, #famine, #war, #migration, #terrorism)
🎵 Music and how it can bring people together

It's a movie you can cry and laugh and dance to.
