I resigned as a member of FSF India Working Group. I demanded a statement from the FSF India board over the rejoining of RMS as FSF board member, but they did not commit to making any statement.

I personally signed rms-open-letter.github.io/

Four Working Group members left so far over disagreements on this issue.

Now they published a statement in support of RMS disregarding our opinions and invited us back. I rejected the invite as I don't want to work with a group who prefer blind loyalty to a leader over commitment to the ideas of software freedom and creating welcoming and inclusive community. Meanwhile RMS published a statement acknowledging the criticism as genuine and I salute him for that.

@praveen Thank you for standing up for your views, even if it felt futile. 👏

@praveen

I'll give an unofficial statement as a recently rejoining associate. We(I;) believe that Stallman was hastily removed during an emotionally volatile time over clear slander and falsities that were inflamed by a few popular media outlets. Making decisions in hasty emotional moods over slander was wrong and we are proud to give a dignified position back to a dignified man. #RMS #LOVE #JUSTICE #EFF #FSF #MOZILLA

@twotwenty
Does an associate have any influence over FSF policies or decisions?

@praveen not anymore then the public opinion as an influence in decision. I would hope that since I voice my opinions more recently in their forums they listen alittle more... I agree with full democracy but with small organizations as the FSF that form of governance will make it susceptible to larger groups and they must preserve the meaning of FOSS and copyleft from people that like watered down expression of OSS.

@praveen or worse seek profit by watering down the FSF's stance on copyleft.

@twotwenty
The important point here is to differentiate between an ally and enemy. Treating everyone criticizing you as enemy is the age old tactics of many leaders to run away from demands of accountability.

@praveen

I care about copyleft and the GPL staying strong. It is not inclusive of proprietary thinking.

@twotwenty
Do you think all the people who signed that letter calling for RMS to be removed from all leadership positions don't care about copyleft or GPL? Do you think only those who oppose Free Software will criticize RMS?

@praveen

answer to question 1: No, but I guess that there are fewer people that care about it, including some of it's authors.

answer you question2:
Of coarse not! thats not logical.

I do believe there have been many campaigns of defamation of stallman over the years. They are seeded in peoples real feelings and amplified by powers that seek to divide it.

@praveen I think getting caught up in an emotional storm clearly with slander in it is a bad time to be making long term decisions.. and a disgrace to harass someoone to step down when clearly so much lies were at the heart of the rage.

@praveen if you want to amplify that sentiment, many of your peers are watching silently.. the really well researched ones to.

@praveen all I hear justify this kind of harassment of RMS is whataboutisms and vague feelings with little substance..

@twotwenty
Before I go and talk about what I think is the problem with RMS, what is your standard for RMS/any leader? Do think we need to check only about his Free Software work/commitment and his personal behavior should not be considered at all? Do you think we need a benevolent dictator for FSF ?

@praveen

There are many types of leaders and their requirements will be fit to purpose.

Leaders are people that others are following.

There can be many leaders going in similar directions and people can follow the ones that best suite their views.

My hope for RMS is to have an unwavering and committed definition of FOSS and copyleft. Absolutely intolerant of proprietary software. And for him a the founding father of such a foundation to ensure it's continuance past his time.

@twotwenty
I don't think commitment to Free Software is sufficient for anyone in the community to excuse their insensitive and disrespectful behavior which drives away contributors. Now many people are speaking up and I don't think it is right to portray everyone speaking up as supporters of proprietary software. That is disrespectful to the contributions and commitment of many people in the community. We are standing up to make Free Software community safe and welcoming for all.

@praveen I think this conversation just got to rhetorical and vague again. I wish you the best in enjoying a massive ecosystem of freesoftware, may the spirit of GPL license live above all other licenses.. the copyleft transcends nationality, race, gender, idealism, culture and our own opinions of eachother we will collaborate and disagree :D thats the beauty. It's really been nice chatting. I'll go on trusting a great leader to cement his legacy and move on with the dignity he deserves.

@praveen
Is there a good source somewhere of all the things he has said done that has caused the outrage?
I need to reason through this whole thing.

@EdwardTorvalds
That is dishonest. I can at least respect people who say Free Software need a benevolent dictator, at least they are honest, even when I disagree.

@EdwardTorvalds
Because you said it is just a question of political correctness. The issue is much deeper. There can be genuine disagreements, but I did not feel yours was that. I have been debating this issue with a lot of people.

@praveen I welcome it as a one of the first steps in many ahead. But I am still not satisfied by the statement and the final decision. I will wait and see if anything has changed or not.
